One traveler, one phone
Maps, messaging, and light work on a single device. Install before you fly and keep your primary number separate if you want.

Add the profile, label it clearly, and enable data for that plan when the issuer says the validity starts.
If a laptop or family devices must join, look at portable Wi-Fi. Do not assume tethering is included.
Use eSIM for a single phone. Use a hotspot when several devices need the same connection.
| Consider | Travel eSIM | Portable Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | One traveler, one phone | Families, teams, multiple devices |
| Setup | Install a digital profile on an unlocked phone | Power on the device and activate the matching plan |
| Sharing | Tethering is often limited or extra | Designed to share Wi-Fi with nearby devices |
| What to confirm | eSIM support, unlock status, destination list | Model, provider ecosystem, battery, and coverage |
| Typical trip | Short stays, light laptop use | Work trips, group travel, heavier shared use |
The phone must be unlocked and show an eSIM or add-cellular-plan option. Carrier-locked phones and many older models cannot install a travel profile.
Sometimes, with limits. Many travel eSIMs restrict tethering. If a laptop or a second person must stay online, compare portable Wi-Fi instead of assuming the phone can share.
Install on Wi-Fi before you travel when you can. Keep the original QR or install details until the line is working in the destination.
